Sand verbenas, nurtured by the brief rainy season, carpet the Borrego Desert of Southern California. Gum and resin on their leaves make the verbenas considerably more drought-resistant than most desert flowers. The shrubs in the background are creosote bushes, whose name comes from the acrid odor they give off, especially after a rain.
